Sudden death of James Hooper

Dear Member,

It is with great sadness that we have to inform the membership of the sudden death of James Hooper.  James died at home, of a heart attack, in the early hours of Tuesday 14th November. We are all shocked.

Most of you will know James, he was a familiar face at meetings. He had a practice in Hove and had been a BSOS member for many years. He helped Roy run (some of) the POS courses and latterly had been involved with teaching students at Guys as well as teaching on the relaunched AOP course in 2013. He served on the committee for many years and had developed a particular interest in digital impression taking.

Although we had met before, I got to know James when we both went on the BSOS trip to Jeff Okeson’s department in Lexington at the University of Kentucky. He’d flown into Cincinnati and hired a car so he drove us around for the whole week, refusing offers of ‘gas’ money.

James was also a keen member of AES and we met in Chicago for the February Meeting most years. He was a keen open water swimmer and was able to fulfil his ambition to swim in Lake Michigan one year when he met up with a group of local swimmers. Despite the freezing temperatures and ice on the surface of the lake, he was rather irritated that they insisted he wear a wetsuit for his swim. He had great fun recounting the story to us over dinner.

Away from work, James was very active, being a keen swimmer, cyclist and sailor. He was very much looking forward to taking delivery of his new boat this weekend.

James leaves behind a wife, Jane, as well as a grownup son and daughter. He will be very much missed by his family, friends, colleagues, patients and alll who knew him.  His funeral will be on Friday 24th November at 11.30am at Woodvale Crematorium, Lewes Road, Brighton, BN2 3QB. Family flowers only, please.   After the service, Jane, Jenny and Christopher invite everyone to join them in their home, 4 Hogarth Road, Hove, BN3 5RG for refreshments and look forward to meeting his many friends and colleagues.
