The aims are to explain the role of dental function, and the effects of parafunction and dysfunction on spinal and cranial function.

The objectives are to enable an understanding of dental occlusion, malocclusions and treatments available; and to help establish a dialogue between the fuctional dentist and physical therapist.

About Peter

Peter Bishop graduated from Bristol University Dental School in 1973.

He worked as an NHS associate for 2 years in central Bristol, and then bought the practice in 1976.

Although the NHS practice thrived, working for the NHS prevented him from practicing as he wanted; so he personally converted to full time private practice in 1980, continuing with four NHS Associates; who also all converted to private practice over the next decade.

This enabled him to progress his studies of occlusion, and practice amalgam-free holistic dentistry, which further lead to his liaison with the chiropractic S.O.T. Community in 1985; providing dental occlusal support for their patients. He has worked with six different SOT Chiropractors, and is currently working exclusively for Dr Iain Smith, Atlas-Orthogonal Chiropractor with a special interest in CCJ and EDS patients.

Initially inspired by a LD Pankey UK lecture from Alvin Fillastre, he went to the LD Pankey institute, Miami, in 1981 , where he was tutored on Continuum 2 by an inspirational dentist, Michael Kadair, who in turn introduced him, later, to the innovator of the “Tanner Appliance”, Henry Tanner.

He founded the Bristol Dental Study Club in 1981, with local practitioners, which met monthly; and arranged many international speakers to run courses in UK, including several with Michael Kadair, Henry Gremillion, Ron Presswood and Henry Tanner.

Peter is a lifetime member of the American Equilibration Society, and has attended many midwinter meetings in Chicago. He was also a member of the British Society of Occlusal Studies, until his retirement.

Peter sold his full time practice in Bristol in 2016, but still continues some dental occlusal consultancy work for AO Chiropractor Dr Iain Smith, limited to Tanner Appliances and equilibration, from a practice in Bath.
