Applied Occlusal Principles
Once you have a good understanding of the theory of occlusion it’s time to put it to use. Our practical courses take you to the next level, teaching you the hands-on skills to manage your patients, using your own patients!
Applied Occlusal Principles is the first of the hands-on courses and has been developed in conjunction with The International Partnership for the Study of Occlusion. It is a successor to the Primary Occlusal Studies courses run in the past by Roy Higson and is appropriate for the demands of the British and Irish Dental Systems.
This hands-on programme is conducted in a modern, well equipped multi-operatory Private Practice in Reading utilising one-on-one supervision with patients from each dentist’s practice, making this the most practical, efficient and cost-effective occlusion learning experience available in dentistry. Dentists work in pairs or threes, taking turns to work on their own patients. All the time they are supervised by the Instructors and supported by Practice staff.
These sessions teach you to treat your own patients:
How to find CR, how to take a facebow and how to properly mount your own models on an articulator
How to make a properly adjusted stabilisation splint.
Jigs, NTIs and partial splints -when to use and when not to.
How to Equilibrate models and then equilibrating the patient. Using both additive and reductive techniques.
As well as learning all these skills, you will have an introduction to TMD, giving you an understanding of when and how you may treat these patients and whether you should be concerned if your patient has a click.
There are three main instructors, Jette and Steven Holbrook and Mark Hargreaves. All 3 are UK based and have a wealth of experience in treating patients with occlusal and TMD issues. Jette is current chair of BSOS, did her MSc in Occlusal appliances at the Eastman and has been involved in teaching this course for a number of years.
Steven has taught on this course for many years, having originally worked with Roy Higson. Jette and Steven are based in York in Private Practice
The course is based at Kendrick View Dental Practice in Reading where Mark is a partner. As well as lecturing on occlusion and TMD, he has run study groups and has taught on this course twice before. Mark is the course organiser.
Occlusion Management is fundamental to the delivery of first class dentistry.
There is no better format to learn these skills than in limited attendance seminars using hands-on training with your own patients in a Practice environment!
